Is your Talent Available for Service?

(This entry was submitted by my friend and brother, Minister Kendric Norwood.)

Often we find in our churches ones that have "Talent" but do not exercise their ability nor develop their skills to help a hurting church and a dying world, most can be found on Sunday Morning sitting in every row / pulpit.

Thought: In the business world, organizations have recruitment sessions to spot out talent, and in the professional (sports) realm, teams have scouts and training facilities to help develop the individual for the top level of competition.

Question: Is the church at fault for not developing people, or should the bearing be placed on the individual?

Which brings me to my last thought: What should be the role of the church to help develop the individual, or should the individual solely wait on God for their development?

Matthew 25:15-18
And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.[16] Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.[17] And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.[18] But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.

One of the definitions for talent: “a person who possesses unusual innate ability in some field or activity”.

Let me see if I understand:

First, there are disciples, defined as those who follow Christ.

Then, some of these disciples are ministers. Ministers help, or assist, other individuals in becoming better disciples.

I think we would all agree that God has designed the system so that there are "chosen" human beings--not angels, who are in place to help others in their spiritual development.

I think we would also agree that there are more experienced ministers who have a responsibility to assist newer ministers, so that, ultimately, more individuals become better disciples.

Let me make a couple observations:

1. There are many so-called ministers, who are really manipulators. They have no desire to help others become better disciples. As rev_b suggested, they are really out to help themselves.

2. On the other side, I've seen ministers burn themselves out trying to help individuals who really didn't want to be helped.

2b. The growth of the local church should reflect the effectiveness of the entire ministry in helping others grow.

3. Finally, the real objective in ministry is to help people, no matter where they are in life, strengthen their relationship with God. Why? Not just to increase the size of the congregation. Not just to eradicate poverty. Not just so people can live to reach 90 years old. But because God loves his children and desires to be in relationship with them.

Quote (A business, unlike a church, seeks to meet the needs of the customer, the individual who buys their products or services.
Also, in order to be successful at this work, the business must develop and training their employees) Quote

SEE, NOW I AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT WHOLEHEARTEDLY...
GOOD BUSINESSES ARE RUN WITH THE CUSTOMER IN MIND.
BELEIVE IT OR NOT, MANY CHURCHES, EVEN THOUGH THEY PROCLAIM THAT THEY ARENT - ARE BUSINESSES.
IF THE CLIENTELE, WHICH IS THE BODY OF CHRIST IS FED, THEN THE BODY/AKA BUSINESS WILL GROW. ANY PASTOR WHO CANT SEE THIS SIMPLE EQUATION WOULD BE BLIND.
WHY DO WE AS INDIVIDUALS FREQUENT THE SAME PLACES OVER AND OVER AGAIN? THINK ABOUT IT WHEN NEXT YOU BUY ANY PRODUCT OR SERVICE.

quote (Churches make the mistake of forcing members to get involved in the running of the church when that may not be where God has called them. As a result, that individual may become ineffective in their real assignment because their time is being wasted as a member of the choir, for example. Especially since most "Kingdom" work happens outside the walls of the church. )Quote

SOME OF THIS THOUGHT IS TRUE, BUT THE SAME SCENERIO DOES NOT FIT FOR EVERY INDIVIDIUAL.
I THINK FOR ANYTHING TO BE SUCCESSFUL, THERE HAS TO BE A CERTAIN LEVEL OF 'BALANCE'
