Ice Cream for Breakfast?

Welcome my lovely wife, Carmen, to the author's table...

I recently read a book by Leslie Levine entitled, Ice Cream for Breakfast. The main idea of the book is that as adults, we need to break some of rules that we impose on ourselves in order to enjoy life a bit more.

There's a verse in the Bible that states, "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me."

Yes. I believe that we should leave childishness behind us as we mature into adults. But being a responsible adult doesn't mean I need to be stuffy and boring!

I believe that being TOO rule-oriented stifles our tenacity and perseverance when it come to achieving life's goals. Don't get me wrong. I am not advocating that adults break laws or be irresponsible. But I have noticed, as the author mentioned in the book, that our thirst for adventure seems to wane as we age. Rather than exciting us, the unknown makes us anxious. For some reason, we forget to nurture our imaginations.

Live a little. Be silly sometimes. Dance in the rain. Don't wait until you're old and tired to enjoy life's simple pleasures.

I believe, as the author states on the cover of the book, "If You Follow All The Rules, You Miss Half the Fun"

Thanks, Carmen, for sharing this thought. I am believing more and more that the key to life is balance. When we take ourselves, our lives, our business TOO seriously, we fail to appreciate the simple pleasures in life.

I guess my challenge is that I often feel that when I "take a break" or "goof off" a little, I am limiting my possibilities. But I guess it goes back to the blog I did on Taking Breaks. When you don't take breaks, burnout is inevitable.

Thank you for bringing this up! I am such a goofy person and it's so crazy because people always look at me like I'm crazy... like because I'm an adult with three kids all of a sudden I have to be so serious all the time!? Don't get me wrong, because there is a time to be serious.... but my motto is, only when you HAVE too.

I agree. At 41,I do what I want when I want. I eat what I want when I want. My husband says I eat various foods that "don't go together", then complain when I get sick. I will never stop...rolling in the grass, playing the the sandbox & sprinkler, jumping rope and writing with chalk on the driveway with my 4 year old, because the teenagers won't play with her.

Amen, aspence...most say I'm crazy also and my certain sense of humor is not always appreciated by saints. So I have a circle I can be free to be crazy with - they are crazy too.

Rules, rules, everywhere. We follow all kinds of stuff (unwritten rules) that we don't know the origination of. Have fun in life and enjoy what you can, while you can. A few bowls of ice cream never hurt anyone.
