We do some things automatically, or involuntarily, as a result of long-standing habits. It amazes me that you can do something so much, that your mind creates a routine that performs that action without requiring any additional thought.
Often, these habits are destructive. They produce results that are not conducive to health and wholeness.
One of the members of the class shared how she was raised to eat everything on her plate. By doing that for years and years, a habit was created. It has taken tremendous effort to resist that habit even now as an adult.
How does a person break an unwanted habit?

To learn a new habit, you must repeat it at least 21 times before your brain accepts it.
Here is a poem I remembered:
Watch your thoughts,
they become words.
What your words,
they become actions.
Watch your actions,
they become habits.
Watch your habits,
they become character.
Watch your character,
it becomes destiny.
If you want to change your bad habits,
1. Identify them.
2. Pray to God for the strength and courage to change them.
3. Monitor your thoughts, words, and actions.
4. Repeat the good habit at least 21 times so it becomes a part of your regiment.
I was always taught 4 weeks of an action can make it permanent...but the 21 times sounds more concrete...
