I watched the second part of Spike’s joint last night on HBO. (Maybe I was just tired, but the first 2 parts that aired on Monday night seemed to be more engaging than Tuesday’s program.)
Regardless, the images of the devastation in New Orleans, as well as other parts of the Gulf Coast (i.e. Mississippi), left me thinking, “Is there something I can do to help?”
I would hope that after viewing such shocking images, or hearing accounts of such unmerited human suffering, that you would be moved to the point of action, too.
Here’s what’s interesting to me…we don’t all have the same “soft spots”. What moves you may not move me. I may be ambivalent to a situation that just breaks your heart.
I guess this occurs when there’s a part of us that identifies, or connects with the individual in need. If I can’t identify, then there’s no real emotional, empathetic response.
I’m not sure what moves you, but there is enough suffering in the world to push all of our buttons. Whether it’s the situation in the Gulf Coast, the wars in Iraq or the Middle East, or some injustice in your local neighborhood, I hope that something compels you to get M.A.D.—and make a difference.
Thanks, Spike, for bringing this particular situation back in public view.
P.S. I hope you're mad enough to VOTE next election.
