I played college football at a pretty high level. Penn State Football, despite the recent 'down' years, is respected as one of the dominant programs in the sport. As a result, the team attracts top talent from all over the country.
Many of the student-athletes that come to Penn State are high school superstars. Thanks to the internet, many of their names are recognized by sports fans before they reach their 17th birthday! Then, if they have any success at all at the college level, it is not long before they are household names.
You would think that with all the success, exposure, and notoriety, all of these young men would be confident and secure individuals.
Here's what I've found...often, individuals that APPEAR to be the most confident can actually be some of the most insecure people on the planet.
Sometimes, people that look like they have it all together, really have very little self-confidence and constantly need affirmation from others to feel valued. This is not just true with athletes, but it also goes for entertainers, government offices, business leaders, etc.
I would even venture to say that arrogance and cockiness are often 'fronts' used by insecure individuals to hide their real feelings about themselves.
Do you know people that pretend to be strong and secure, but are really insecure and have very little self-confidence?

It seems like God often uses people that feel "inadequate." I know the biblical examples support this. People like Moses, the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Isaiah, and, Jeremiah all seemed to feel inadequate. What do you think about this?
If some of us go around acting as insecure as we feel, people would definitely get tired of being around us because we would appear to be "leeches." And, if we expose how we really feel about ourselves, others might start feeling that way also.
There's an old southern saying that you have to "put the best on the outside." It's not hypocrisy or pretence, it's just social grace.
