Hear No Evil

We are bombarded on a constant basis with all kinds of messages, from all kinds of sources. Friends and family members. C0-workers. Television, radio, CDs, and DVDs. Billboards and commercials. Politicians and Preachers. Your own mind, body, and spirit.

If you could tally up all the messages that you receive in a day (which I realize is impossible), what percentage of the messages would you say are positive? negative?

The more I really listen, the more I realize that there are too many negative messages that are sent my way. And I'm learning that if you want to remain a positive, productive individual, you have to learn how to filter out all those negative messages.

Just think of messages as seeds, and your mind as a garden. Whatever seeds you allow to take root in the garden of your mind, will eventually produce some kind of fruit. Fruit can be manifested as an attitude, conversation, or behavior.

Filter out those negative seeds, and keep your mind healthy and pure.

what's sad is there are certain things that we see or hear that will never be erased from our memory and can be very traumatizing.

i always try to keep this in mind when i am speaking because i know that i speak very freely and without little thought to what's about to come out and while whatever i may be talking about may not hit close to home for me (even something as simple -to me- as complaining about my weight) the simplest things in my mind may really offend someone else.... permanently.

once we see or hear something, there's no going back. no un-seeing or un-hearing. true, alot of things do "go in one ear and out the other", but some things are really disturbing. 9-1-1 for example. we can almost go back to that moment like it just happended if we allow ourselves to ponder it too much.

everything is relative and we need to constantly remind ourselves what we know to be true.

I tried an experiment where I did NOT have a television in my house for six months.

Let me say that was the best experiment I ever conducted. It was amazing how much more upbeat and positive and focused I was for that 180 days without the "boob" tube manipulating my fears, desires, and temptations.

More importantly, as other forms of media (newspaper, radio, and internet) disseminated all sorts of negativity, I was more attuned to recognize it and deflect it.

I challenge anyone to remove television from their lives for just 30 consecutive days out of 365 and you will a liberation of spirit, mind, and yes, even body.

its so odd that you would say this, cus this has been my mantra all this week..
Hear no evil..
see no evil..
even amidst all the stalking that has happened this week (disgruntal ex employee) and hardships with the horrid township over a silly sign..
I just chalk it up to it being all a part of *this* life..
I just go home, rest my head, and blot everything out..
and know that tomorrow will be a better day and that no matter what the trials, the blood still has its power.
I personally, am not a television , or newspaper person. Why..
I chose that lifestyle.
I dont want to know everything about the stuff that goes on outside. I dont want to fill my thoughts with every nook and cranny detail.
Some may see it as unrealistic to stay uninformed, but for me, who cares, it works.
Less stuff to think about, less stuff to stress about..
I have paid my dues in life, and I am at the point, where I am choosing what stuff is worthy enough to enter my mind and my thoughts..
just my two cents..

You hit on something very critical. I've been saying this to my young people. During your next Sunday morning service take a moment to look around at your young people. Watch who isn't into the flow of the service. Often it's not that they don't understand, they have no connection. Mon-Sat there ears are tuned into Jay Z, Fifty, Beyonce and all the like. They have no space to hear what thus sayeth the Lord. Myspace is their new God. Can't quote a scripture but If I say "we fly high, no lie..." every young person can fill in the rest of the words. The devil has a new plan of attack. The music enables them to tune God out and not even know it.
