Government offices, Public Schools, and the Stock Market are closed today. However, most other businesses are open.
Which means...if the office is open, then PEOPLE are working!
I thought that by definition, on HOLIDAYS, people are NOT WORKING!
People in general, and African-Americans in particular, have a variety of perspectives on the MLK Holiday. Some of them have the day off. Others choose to work. While others work just part of the day, and attend some type of commemorative event.
How do you approach the MLK holiday?

I am not working today. Even though my daughter is not old enough to understand - I told her this morning that today was Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday and that he was an important contributor in the history of the struggle of our people. She looked up at me smiled and ran off to do what most 14 months old do -- play!
You know years ago, when I worked in a strictly causcian atmosphere, I had to go to work. MLK was not recognized as a holiday, even now that its a federal holiday, its still not recognized by a lot of main stream america.
My friends who are further up north tell me that they had to report to work today.
Bummer.
Me, I didnt have to report, because my boss is of the same ethnic group as my self, and so there, he recognizes the importance of this day.
I think it is a bit disingenuous for an employer to profess that it embraces diversity when it upholds a company policy that requires its employees to declare a vacation day for the MLK federal holiday if they want to have the day off.
Don't get me wrong, I understand that a lot of organizations have a fundamental business need to continue to produce profit. But what exactly is the purpose of all of this PR about embracing diversity, when the very substance of the employer's actions seems to suggest that "we could give a damn less!".
What sickens me most about Corporate America is its inconsistencies regarding human resources (people!). The game of business requires a stratagem all of its own that degenerates people into disposable commodities.
It sickens me to even discuss the seemingly undeniable hypocrisy.
